Downtown Ventura Engagement Photography // Sara & Ken

I have to say that I have the most wonderful and most intentional couples on the planet. On Sara and Ken’s Intro Call, I knew Sara and Ken wanted to see their true relationship in the photos and the value it would create for the years to come. We met at Bank of Italy Cocktail Trust on main street in downtown Ventura, California, for a quick cocktail before heading out to create some art.

Downtown Ventura is optimal for getting creative on engagement and portrait sessions. Sara and Ken had shared that they wanted to have a variety of downtown Ventura and some of the beautiful Southern California beach to show the love they have for the ocean. ( I promise, no matching white shirts and blue jeans. ) When we first started their session, I always believe couples need time to fall into feeling comfortable in front of the camera, but these two leaned into the process of loving each other as if no one was around and focusing on being present. Regardless of what situation we were in, or scenario I put them in, they had a blast, made conversation, and laughed with each other.

Something that really stood out to me about Sara and Ken and their relationship came to me on one of my calls with Ken where he said the following,

“The times she stumbles over something, are just as adorable as when they go dancing and she is so graceful; when she has painting clothes on vs. her cute Eiffel Tower dress for work that day, they are both her. I don’t want to miss out on the pieces that we usually throw away, or trim because they do not look quite as ideal.“

Hearing and reading this reminds me of the statement I have on my website, “Creative Wedding Photography for Value and Purpose Driven Couples”.

Life is filled with perfect moments, but they will come and go. His statement stopped me and made me process what life with our partners is really about. The moments that we share with each other, and create, are not always ideal or perfect, rather, they are moments to value, they are filled with purpose, they are not to be missed or thrown away because of “perfection”. This is why I value these creative sessions with my couples, they give us a chance to create and capture love in action, regardless of the circumstances. It is a reminder of what is truly valuable in life.
